I hate sleeping in the afternoons!

I hate to sleep in the afternoons. So, does my cousin Meera. But my grandparents are old and so they need to sleep in the afternoon. During the summer vacations, my cousin Meera and I, spend at least a month with our grandparents, in Calicut. During the afternoons, we are often told to sleep  because there is no saying what mischief we will do if we have the whole house to just ourselves! Especially when we were small.

For the first few days, we would creep out of the room after they had slept and play around the house. Meera and I would make sure that we returned to the room five minutes before ammamma and muthaccha would wake up. My muthaccha is a stickler for time, he does everything on time! So no confusion there.

After they woke up we would grumble about how boring it was being stuck inside a room trying to sleep. After a few days, one day, muthaccha woke up early and we were caught. Then on wards he would lock the door of the room to make sure we stayed inside.

Now, that door used to creak a lot. We all know that it is very, very hard to open a creaking door, run out, come back and shut the door again without waking up two people sleeping in the room. To top it all muthaccha didn't really sleep, he was alert all the time and mostly he just lied down.
Meera and I would have to think of another way.

After days and days of thinking, we came up with an idea. The idea was that Meera would say very loudly that she was going for a drink of water. Then she would open the door and we both would slip out. After some time, we would shut the door so that muthaccha thought we are inside while we were actually out playing. This idea worked for a few days and we try this even today.

But honestly when I think about it, I think muthachha knows exactly what we are up to all the time, and he is just humoring his very naughty grandchildren!
