Hansel and Gretel - in my own words
Last summer vacation, on one of the days when i was really really getting bored, and couldn't find any good ideas to write about, I decided to write a long poem narrating the story of Hansel and Gretel. Hope you read and enjoy my version!
In a village outside a wood,
there lived two children nice and good
Hansel and Gretel lived alone with their father,
due to the untimely death of their mother
Their father, depressed and sad,
married a woman, mean and mad
The women hated the young children,
and they hated her too
And one day a cunning plan she drew,
she planned to take the children out
And say, "I'll be hereabout",
then leave them on their own
To die in the woods all alone
Hansel heard this and ran outside
and he filled some stones in his bag
Next morning when they got up,
their step-mother grinned and said
"We're having a picnic in the woods and here's your sup,
now wash your face and make your bed!"
Hansel walked behind,
and occasionally dropped stones in a line
All they did was roam and roam,
until their mother finally went home
Hansel and Gretel waited for some time,
feasting on oranges and lime
Then they followed the stones on the lane,
and went back to their home again
Their step-mother with anger turning red,
said, "no food for you, go to bed"
While the brother and sister slept,
quietly to the door she crept
And shutting it she cried,
no more stones for you tonight!
Next morning when they got up,
their step-mother grinned and said
"We're having a picnic in the woods and here's your sup,
now wash your face and make your bed!"
Hansel and Gretel feeling scared,
quickly grabbed a loaf of bread
Hansel slowly walked behind,
and occasionally dropped breadcrumbs in a line
All they did was roam and roam,
until their mother finally went home
Hansel and Gretel waited for some time,
feasting on oranges and lime
They looked for the bread crumbs at nightfall,
and realized that the birds had eaten it all!
They walked around all day,
again and again they lost their way
Hansel and Gretel gave up and cried,
until a strange house they spied
Walls of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry,
and golden dripping honey!
A chimney with marshmallows and cherry,
and windows made with orange jelly!
Hansel and Gretel stood staring and staring,
after a day of hunger, it looked inviting!
They ran as fast they could
and started to eat the delicious food
They ate and ate and ate and ate,
until they heard a slam of a gate!
There stood an old hag,
her body covered in pieces of rag
She hobbled up to them and cried,
"Enough, enough now go inside"
Turning bright red with rage,
she put Hansel inside a cage
She made Gretel scrub and scour,
make dinner, and sweep the floor
And so they went on for many days,
till one day the witch cries and says
"Gretel, I want to you to bake
a delicious chocolate cake"
Gretel said, "can you help me open,
this very hot and heavy oven?"
The witch crouching on the floor,
opened the oven door
Gretel quickly pushed her in
and shutting the door let Hansel free!
The sister and brother danced in glee,
then they sat down and fed themselves
with lots of butter and a loaf of bread!
In the cottage they found many chests,
filled with rubies, emeralds and diamond crests
Putting all they could grasp in a bag,
down to the road they drag
Then they walked down the lane,
back to their house again
There they found their father,
had got rid of their evil step-mother
Their father hugged them and said,
"your absence filled me with dread!"
With all the money they now had,
they built a mansion new and grand!
Then they lived happily ever after,
without a worry about their evil step mother!

Loved your version of Hansel and Gretel, Ammu. Hansel and Gretel was and still is my favourite fairy tale. I would always dream of all the things I'd eat if I could visit an actual house made out of cookies, chocolates and everything delicious!
